The Portuguese Podengo Club of America

2006 Specialty and Annual Meeting

The 4th Annual Meeting and Specialty was held on March 31, 2006 in Hickory, North Carolina in conjunction with the Parade of Portugal, a United Kennel Club (UKC) event designed to bring together Portuguese Podengos, Portuguese Water Dogs, Portuguese Pointers and Estrela Mountain Dogs. Judged by Luis Pinto Teixeira of Portugal and organized by the Estrela Mountain Dog Association of America, the Specialty show brought together small wire coat and smooth coat Podengos.

The winner of the Podengo Specialty was Dahlia do Vale Negro, a smooth coat owned by Darlene Devaney of San Diego, California and bred by Carla Molinari of Portugal. The Best of Breed of Wire Coat Pequenos was Icaro do Vale Negro, owned by Marilyn Piurek of Old Saybrook, CT, and bred by Carla Molinari of Portugal. Winners Dog was Spanky, owned by Sue Davis of Clive, Iowa and bred by M. Antonieta Rodrigues of Portugal. Following the show, a breed seminar was conducted by Judge Luis Teixeira, Vice President of the Kennel Club of Portugal and renowned international judge.

The Annual Meeting focused on an update of activities in 2005 and the growing numbers of Podengos in the US. Of the 30 new Podengos in the last calendar year, twelve were born in the United States. A number of articles on the breed have appeared in local and national press, and PPCA's website is now ranked at or close to #1 on most Google searches as the most trafficked Podengo site in the world. The big challenge is to get all pedigrees of US Podengos recorded at the AKC-FSS in order for the breed to advance more quickly towards full recognition. Due to logistical factors, this meeting did not have a quorum and no official business was conducted.
