On January 1, 2008, the Portuguese Podengo will be eligible to participate in AKC Companion Events, which include Rally (an entry-level Obedience event), Obedience, and Agility, as well as in Lure Coursing, an AKC Performance Event.
"Sports" is a new section of the website that we are developing to encourage Portuguese Podengo owners to participate in these events. All three Companion Events will be held at the AKC Lousiville Show March 13-16. We will be holding our 2008 National Specialty on March 14 in Simpsonville, KY, which is close to Louisville to enable our members to show their dogs at our Specialty and also compete in Companion Events at the AKC Louisville Show. Remember that you have to list your dog with AKC's Foundation Stock Service in order to compete in Companion Events. At the top of the Podengos Section of this website is a form you can download to list your Potuguese Podengo with FSS.
This section of the website will soon feature some Portuguese Podengos that are excelling in Rally, Obedience, Agility and Lure Coursing to inspire you to try your dogs in these events. Don't be intimidated if you've never done it before. We'll be providing you with helpful "how-to's" to get you started. You'll find that it opens up a whole new dimension of life with your dog that can be very fulfilling for both of you.
For those of you reading this page who do not yet own a Portuguese Podengo, you should be aware that when breeders of the Portuguese Podengo in the U.S. and abroad sell their non-show quality dogs, many prioritize buyers who make a commitment to participate in Companion or Performance Events. This is essential to preserve the superb athleticism of the Portuguese Podengo and the robust health that comes of it.
