PPPCA is a positive network of Podengo owners and aficionados who have contributed mightily to the preservation and promotion of the breed in the United States. Here are some of the "Firsts" pioneered by PPPCA members and their Podengos:
First purebred Podengo Pequeno Smooth Coat in America: Zara do Casal de Pauves, owned by Lucia Moura of New York and brought to the United States in 1995
First purebred Podengo Pequeno Wire Coat in America: Chicharro de Viamonte (Manny) brought to America in 2001 and owned by Marilyn Piurek. He was the first Podengo to become a Champion in the USA (ARBA and Rarities), the first American Podengo to be exhibited abroad (2003) and the first Portuguese Podengo Canadian Champion (2006).
First purebred Portuguese Podengo litter born in the United States: Alpha and Amerigo de Bramblewood, bred by Judy Parker of New York and born January 18, 2003.
First American born Podengo to become a Portuguese Champion: Cristovao da Casa de Maio, bred and owned by Darlene Devaney, was exhibited at Monografica 2008 in Portugal where he earned his Portugal champion title.
First American to show at Crufts: On March 5, 2009 Havano de Casa da Torre de Plushcourt (Harry), bred by Betty Judge of England and owned by Heather Kenyon of Kentucky USA, was shown at Crufts 2009 in England. Harry is the first American-owned Podengo to show at Crufts and Heather is the first American to handle a Podengo there!
