Welcome to the official website of the PPCA!
The Portuguese Podengo Club of America was founded in 2003 by owners of some of the first purebred Portuguese Podengos in the United States and brings together individuals who share a love for and interest in raising, training, breeding, hunting and showing their Podengos. The PPCA respects the integrity of the breed as described in the Breed Standard and works cooperatively with the Podengo Club of Portugal and the Kennel Club of Portugal to preserve and protect this ancient rare breed.
The PPCA is recognized as the parent breed club for the Portuguese Podengo in America by the Clube do Podengo Portugues of Portugal, the Kennel Club of Portugal, the American Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, the American Sighthound Field Association and the American Rare Breed Association. The Podengo has been accepted into the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service, the first step to full AKC recognition and will begin to compete in AKC Companion Events on January 1, 2008. PPCA represents all six types of Portuguese Podengos in the USA-- the Podengo Grande Smooth Coat, Podengo Medio Smooth Coat, Podengo Pequeno Smooth Coat, Podengo Grande Wire Coat, Podengo Medio Wire Coat, and Podengo Pequeno Wire Coat.
