THE PORTUGUESE PODENGO PEQUENO CLUB OF AMERICA!

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America, Inc. (PPPCA™) was incorporated in 2003, the first Podengo club in the United States. This website is wholly owned by the PPPCA and focusses on the small Podengo, called "Pequeno" in Portuguese. We are the largest club representing the breed in the USA and work with members and breed aficionados in an extensive education program to protect and promote the Portuguese Podengo throughout the country. The PPPCA™ has a strong Code of Ethics and a popular breeder referral program for individuals looking for healthy, hardy, happy puppies.

More than 300 of these small hounds live in the USA and are quickly becoming loved by all who know them. 80% are of the wire coat variety and 20% have smooth coats and ALL are wonderful! Intelligent, healthy, active and fun loving, our little Podengos make great pets and love to show, play, and engage in sports. With an average life span of 17 and engaging personalities, this ancient rare breed is fast capturing America's hearts!

We hope you find this website interesting and informative. The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Breed Standard, developed in cooperation with Portugal - the mother country for the breed - can be found, along with other helpful information. And many thanks to "Wild Bill" Taylor for the artwork (above), which so accurately conveys the fun and enthusiasm of this wonderful little dog.

PODENGO HISTORY

The Portuguese Podengo, an ancient hound, is a national dog of Portugal whose history is deeply interwoven with that of the country and its people. Appearing in literature and art as early as the 11th century, its origins date to the Phoenicians, with whom Podengo-like dogs arrived in the Iberian Peninsula from Asia Minor. Centuries later, small Podengos traveled aboard the ships of the Portuguese explorers, including Magellan and Vasco da Gama, keeping the ship's food stores free of mice. It is even said that Christopher Columbus had some of these little dogs on his ships!

The first significant influx of Podengos to the United States began in 2001. We now have our own breeding programs, led by the health and welfare-conscious Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America, which requires certain procedures and health tests and the recording of all of our dogs with the AKC-FSS.

In addition to the popular Podengo Pequeno (small), Podengo Medio (medium size) and Podengo Grande (large) also live in the USA. The Podengo Pequeno is classified by AKC as a separate breed, though all sizes come from the same ancient roots.

The Podengo Pequeno averages 9-13 lbs, stands 8" -12" tall, and comes in two coat types - smooth and wire. The Pequeno is a hound that is known to be one of the best rabbit hunters in the world. It is also a fine pet and companion, excels in sports - hunting, lure coursing, flyball and agility - and is happiest in an active home.

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America (PPPCA™) represents the Podengo Pequeno in the USA, with members in most states. For more information, contact us at podengosUSA@aol.com

About PPPCA
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America was founded in 2003 by owners of some of the first purebred Portuguese Podengos in the United States and brings together individuals who share a love for and interest in raising, training, breeding, hunting and showing their Podengos. In April 2003, the Portuguese Podengo Club of America (now PPPCA™) voted unanimously to pursue recognition of the Portuguese Podengo by the American Kennel Club. Following the submission of its application, Club members began recording their Podengos in 2004 with AKC's Foundation Stock Service in its quest for full AKC recognition for the breed. In August 2008, the Club requested that AKC split the Pequeno as a separate breed from the Medio and Grande and, in July 2009, added the word "Pequeno" to its name to clarify the Club's focus on the Podengo Pequeno. In December 2009, the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America (PPPCA) submitted its application to the AKC for selection as the Parent Club for the breed in the United States.

The PPPCA™ respects the integrity of the breed as described in the Breed Standard and works cooperatively with the Podengo Club of Portugal and the Kennel Club o
