MATICAR NOW ON WEBSITE

Simply use the navigation menu above and choose "News". Your first choice will be "PPPCA Newsletter". Click that and then download your own copy of the Autumn 2011 newsletter. The new 10th anniversary issue will be coming out soon in our winter 2012 edition and will be a great salute to a great club and wonderful dogs.

This year's Specialty - our 9th annual! - was held August 6, 2011 in Freehold, NJ. We followed that by a supported entry at the Hunterdon Hills Kennel Club show on August 7, 2011. It was a great weekend of Podengos and Podengo People!

There is special additional coverage in Maticar of the August 18, 2011 Rocky Mountain Kennel Club show in Greeley, CO where a number of PPPCA members and their proud Podengos got together to waive the PPP colors - check those out too!

Thanks to all the club members who are working to get PPP's out to show!

Maticar also contains an interview with Kip Bergstrom. Kip did a recent judges education session for the Northeast Dog Judges Study Group. His Maticar interview gives a great summary of the important points of the judges seminar.

Lastly, we still have a few of our 2011 PPPCA Specialty special edition t-shirts in stock. You know you want one to commemorate the event! So click on the "Shopping Cart" link to the left and follow it to our products page to check out the shirts!

Keep enjoying your dogs! Bob.

PPPCA HISTORY

Welcome to the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America, incorporated in 2003 and the first and largest organization of Podengo Pequeno owners in the United States. In 2010, the prestigious American Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club merged with us, bringing even more expertise and lots of friendly folks and great dogs. See more at http://www.podengo-pequeno.com. Together we are dedicated to preserving and protecting this ancient hound whose origins date back thousands of years.

Coming to the Iberian Peninsula with the Phoenicians from the area of Asia Minor more than 2,000 years ago, Podengo Pequenos can be seen on the bas relief of 11th century churches in Portugal and first appear in literature in the 14th century. These small Podengos traveled around the world on the caravels of Portuguese explorers, keeping the ship's food stores free of rodents and protecting the sailors from vermin-born disease. In 2001, PPPCA's founders, Marilyn Piurek & Kip Bergstrom, brought the first Podengos to show in the USA.

The Podengo Pequeno averages 9-13 lbs, stands 8" -12" tall, and comes in two coat types - smooth and wire. It has an average life expectancy of 17 years, though some have lived even longer. A hound that is known as one of the best rabbit hunters in the world, it is also a fine companion, excels in the sports of hunting, lure coursing, flyball and agility, is a great little service dog, and is happiest in an active home.

The Podengo Pequeno is accepted in all international registries and is registered in the US with FCPR, UKC, ARBA, and rare breed organizations. It is recorded at AKC and participates in AKC Miscellaneous Class as well as AKC agility, obedience and rally.

PUPPIES

PPPCA is the only Podengo Pequeno club in the US whose members are dedicated to breeding healthy, well socialized puppies. We encourage outcrossing with the best possible diverse foundation stock. PPPCA has extensive experience with rare breeds and works in partnership to fulfill our obligations to the Podengo Pequeno. NEW! PUPPIES -- happy, healthy, beautiful smooth and wire coat litters! PPPCA has a registered breeders program and lists all Member Breeders at http://www.podengos.com/links/memberbreederlinks/

Make sure the breeder you work with is a bona fide member of the PPPCA. No other club practices the careful breeding that we do. Browse these pages to learn more about the breed and the PPPCA. If you have questions or would like more information, contact us at info@podengos.com
