The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America was founded in 2003 by owners of some of the first purebred Portuguese Podengos in the United States and brings together individuals who share a love for and interest in raising, training, breeding, hunting and showing their Podengos. In April 2003, the Portuguese Podengo Club of America (PPPCA) voted unanimously to pursue recognition of the Portuguese Podengo by the American Kennel Club. Following the submission of its application, Club members began recording their Podengos in 2004 with AKC's Foundation Stock Service in its quest for full AKC recognition for the breed. In August 2008, the Club requested that AKC split the Pequeno as a separate breed from the Medio and Grande and, in July 2009, added the word "Pequeno" to its name to clarify the Club's focus on the Podengo Pequeno.
In August 2010, the American Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club merged with the PPPCA with a shared mission to protect and promote the Portuguese Podengo throughout the United States. Together, we are the largest Podengo Pequeno Club in the USA, and 80% of PPPCA households have at least one little Podengo!
The PPPCA respects the integrity of the breed as described in the Breed Standard and works cooperatively with Podengo organizations throughout the world to preserve and protect this ancient rare breed. The PPPCA was the first subscriber to the Lisbon Protocol, a document setting forth the relationship and shared values of the Podengo Club of Portugal, the Kennel Club of Portugal, and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America.
The Pequeno began to compete in AKC Companion Events on January 1, 2008 and competes in AKC Sanction "B" Matches which invite rare breeds. On January 1, 2011, the Podengo Pequeno will move into AKC's Miscellaneous Class. After at least one year in this Class, the breed may move forward to full AKC recognition and a parent club will be selected for the breed by the AKC Board. More history of the PPPCA may be found on the link below, PPPCA History.
