Not only does this protect your dog and reaffirm its pedigree, but it helps put the Portuguese Podengo on track for full recognition by the AKC. Once there are 300 Podengos of 3-generation pedigrees recorded at AKC's Foundation Stock Service and all other requirements are met, the breed will move into Miscellaneous Class and ultimately will become fully recognized. When the breed is recognized, all 3 generation Podengos recorded with the Foundation Stock Service will convert to become full-fledged AKC and papers will be issued by AKC at no extra cost to the owner.
Recording your Podengos is a simple process and each Podengo recorded will get an FSS number that is then used on all official documents.
We now have about 250 Podengo Pequenos in the United States with three-generation pedigrees. But not all have been recorded yet at AKC. PPCA will continue trying to round up those that are as yet unrecorded and we urge you to record all of your Podengos, adults and puppies.
Here is the process for recording your Podengos at AKC-FSS:
(1) AKC-FSS Individual Recording
First Things First:
The FSS number of the sire and dam are required in order to record your puppies. You may print out and/or download the AKC-FSS application form and its directions on this website under the "Podengos" heading, topic "Record Your Podengo" A required attachment is a "3-generation pedigree issued by an acceptable domestic or foreign registry. Lacking this pedigree documentation, the applicant may submit export papers or any supporting documentation identifying the breed, sire, dam, and your ownership." (Only those with 3-generation pedigrees from acceptable registries are counted towards the required number of 300 of a breed in the USA. This is only one of many requirements for AKC recognition)
Attach to this application two 3" x 5" close-up color photographs of the dog in a standing position: one front view; one side view, with the dog's name and registration number printed on the back of each photograph. This is the registration number of the dog/bitch from the acceptable foreign registry (in the case of the American born Portuguese Podengo, there is NO acceptable domestic registry) Send the completed, signed application with a copy of the 3-generation pedigree issued by the acceptable registry or suitable other documentation as described above, and the two photos and the fee for recording to: The American Kennel Club P.O. Box 37920 Raleigh, NC 27627-7920 (2) Puppy Litter Recording Process For recording a litter of puppies born in America, one simply follows the directions on the litter kit application form, downloaded at www.akc.org/forms . If the sire and dam are recorded at FSS, their FSS numbers are put on this application. If the sire or dam was imported after March 1, 2006, an AKC DNA profile must be on file prior to the recording of their first AKC FSS-recorded litter.
For those Podengos imported BEFORE March 1, 2006, an AKC DNA Profile must be on file if the sire has sired seven (7) or more litters in his lifetime or more than three (3) litters in a calendar year. In order to file a DNA application, the dog/bitch must have an FSS number.
After this Puppy Litter Registration Form is sent in and processed, the AKC will send the applicant individual puppy registration forms with FSS numbers issued as per number of puppies in that litter.
(3) Individual Puppy Registration at AKC-FSS These forms may be filled out by the new owner or by the breeder. Preferably, the breeder fills out and submit the forms in cooperation with the new owner in order to make sure it is done correctly. At this point, the breeder may choose to check the limited registration box on the form or not. A checked Limited Registration means that the dog is not to be used in breeding and entry in dog events is restricted.
(4) Recording US-Born Puppies of Portugal Parents with the Clube Portugues de Canicultura (CPC)
An agreement between the Portuguese Podengo Club of America and the Clube Portugues de Canicultura (CPC) allows for individual puppies born in the United States of a sire and dam who are registered at the CPC to register their offspring with the CPC at a reduced rate of $15 for PPCA members. To participate in this transitional program, one must be a PPCA member and the parents of the puppies must have 3-generation pedigrees registered with an LOP number at the Portuguese Kennel Club (CPC). This process is especially good for those individuals who may show their puppies in FCI countries. Once the Podengo is fully recognized by AKC, there will be no need for this process. An application for this registration is processed by the PPCA and sent to Portugal. For more information, contact podengosUSA@aol.com
