When you are considering purchasing any breed, there are some questions you must be sure to ask, and this is the case when seeking a Podengo Pequeno. We are posting a list of questions to ask Pequeno breeders that we hope will be useful to you. It includes some typical questions that you should ask every breeder about their puppies as well as some Pequeno-specific questions. We will even be posting some of the questions that breeders will ask you!
We are thankful for the help given to us by many experienced PPPCA members as we developed this list -- many members have been active with hounds --the Afghan Hound, Ibizan, Basenji, Beagle, PBGV, Greyhound, Dachshund, Borzoi, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Pharaoh Hound, Saluki, Whippet and Irish Wolfhound -- and others who have successfully bred and shown the Swedish Vallhund, Bernese Mountain Dog, German Shepherd, German Pinscher, Giant Schnauzer, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees, PWD, Rottweiler, Siberian Husky, Border Collie, Norwich and Norfolk Terriers, Border Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Silky, Skye and Smooth Fox terriers, Chinese Crested, Chihuahua, American Eskimo Dog, Papillons, Tibetan Terriers, English Bulldogs, Havanese, and an array of other breeds. They are part of PPPCA's helpful members' network who also own small Podengos and are enchanted with them. You will be too!
Ask the Breeder 101
In its March 2006 issue, Dog Fancy magazine featured the Portuguese Podengo and had the following questions in their "Ask the Breeder" section:
What kind of support will you offer during the lifetime of this dog?
How would you describe the temperament of the puppies' parents?
What kind of socialization with children and other pets have these puppies had?
How much daily exercise does this breed need?
Are you a member of the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno Club of America. If not, why?
This a really good start - remember, there is never a bad question and this dog will live with you for a long long time -- their average lifespan is 17 years!
