For the first time in its history, the venerable Crufts dog show exhibited Portuguese Podengos. The Podengo is well on its way to recognition in Crufts, with final full acceptance into the Kennel Club of England projected for 2012.
Crufts is an annual international Championship conformation show for dogs organized and hosted by the KC, currently held every March at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England. It is the largest annual dog show in the world, as declared by the Guinness Book of Records, and lasts four days. It is estimated that an average 28,000 dogs take part in Crufts each year, with an estimated 160,000 human visitors attending the show.
Portuguese Podengos were shown on Thursday, March 5th and there were about 89 Pequenos entered. Many thanks to the great work of Podengo Club of Great Britain President Betty Judge for her hard work organizing Podengos for this show. And CONGRATULATIONS to Betty for her Best of Breed win with CH Barcelo da Casa de Torre de Plushcourt! Betty is an inspiration for us all and has been truly helpful as we develop the Podengo in the United States.
The first American-owned Podengo to be shown at Crufts, Havano da Casa de Torre de Plushcourt was exhibited his owner, Heather Kenyon of Kentucky. Nicknamed 'Harry', this marvelous little boy placed 4th in a group of 11 Podengo Champions and did a fantastic job.
Heather and her mom, Patricia Weber, traveled to this great show where they met other aficionados of the breed from around the world, learning more about the Podengo Pequeno, meeting other breeders, and enjoying the show and the country!
Many thanks to Patricia and Heather for these great photos. Click on for titles.
